We (DPA students) were forced to attend the launching of the SDC (Sabah Development Corridor) which was held at Sepanggar Port yesterday. We arrived pretty darn early as the bus leaves from UiTM at 7am. It was a big event and in a way, I am kind of glad that I went for it. I was hoping to see Tan Sri Bernard Giluk Dompok and his wife Puan Sri Diana Alip/Dompok but unfortunately they were nowhere to be seen. They were there but being VIP and all they were seated at the front and us being a nobody were seated at the back and some even outside...bummer!
The Prime Minister went on and gave his long speech. The gist of his speech are as follow:
- RM36 billion for the development of Sabah
- RM36 billion for the development of Sabah
- No more poverty in Sabah in 2025 which is about 17 years from now
It all sounds pretty good for our or my beloved Sabah but will it really materialize? I mean yesterday was just the launching, the money has not been handed over YET!. I might be wrong here but sometimes things like these are just a ploy as the elections are coming very soon. This is probably just a way to lure in votes for the government. Pretty smart, I'd say but it does take a notch on the dignity of Sabahans.
In 1994, our then prime minister came to sabah and promised a 'SABAH BARU' which translates to "NEW SABAH". The plan in Sabah Baru was to eradicate poverty by 2000 amongst the other things. It's 2008 now and poverty is basically still here to stay. I understand though, it's not easy to eradicate poverty so we're not really pointing fingers at anyone or any organization. These are all political strategies. Elections are coming soon so the government want people to believe that they are able to lead them to a better Malaysia. The idea of that all is very cute but is it really practical? I wonder if they have done research or studies before really implementing all these corridors or development region. Will it really benefit the Sabahan people? Will it really generate 90,000 jobs (as stated by our chief minister) for the locals or will foreigners take over?
Don't get me wrong though with this post. I support the Malaysian government but sometimes I think they practice too much theory and not enough practicality. Take MSC for example, I'm not hearing any news from it and foreign investors are running away from it because there's nothing going on with it after Tun Dr.Mahathir stepped down from his post (or at least that's what I heard).
but anyway....let's all hope for a truly better Sabah and also a better Malaysia! and may God bless our beloved leader Tan Sri Bernard Giluk Dompok and his families for standing up for the dignity of the Kadazans.
To all of you non-believers, I was there! I really was there! lol. I'm like an anchovy tring to get through to the big fishes!
